Cotopaxi Volcano Imaged by NASA Spacecraft
After lying dormant for 70 years, the Cotopaxi volcano in Ecuador continues to rumble. Over the last week, the volcano has been having small explosions emitting steam and ash plumes, all signs that magma is rising into the volcano.
The 5,987-metre volcano is one of the world’s most feared due to its location just 50 km (31 mi) south of Quito.
NASA’s Terra spacecraft acquired this image on August 22 2015, showing huge columns of ash that affected towns in the region.
