Four Cyclones Across the Pacific Ocean
This satellite image shows four tropical cyclones in the Pacific Ocean on September 1, 2015.
Fueled by the very warm waters of an ever-strengthening El Niño, the 2015 Pacific hurricane season has reached new heights. In the Western Pacific is Typhoon Kilo. Moving east is Hurricane Ignacio and Hurricane Jimena. The eastern-most storm is Tropical Depression 14E in the Eastern Pacific.
This season is now the second most-active on record in the central Pacific in terms of accumulated cyclone energy — a metric that combines hurricane strength and duration to measure the overall activity of a season.
