Hurricane Otto was an unusually intense late-season Hurricane. It was also the southernmost hurricane on record to hit Central America. In addition, Otto was the first tropical cyclone to cross through Costa Rica since records began. Otto also was the latest Atlantic hurricane on record to make landfall anywhere in the basin.
The 5-day animation captured by NOAA’s GOES-East satellite of Hurricane Otto was created by the NASA/NOAA GOES Project at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
The animation runs from Nov. 20 to 25, 2016. Otto, the last Atlantic hurricane of the 2016 season, unexpectedly formed during the last week of November in the Southwestern Caribbean Sea, developed an eye at the lowest possible latitude near Costa Rica, and finally drifted across Central America to the Pacific side of the isthmus where it dissipated.
