Pluto1Pluto was discovered in 1930 by Clyde W. Tombaugh. Because the dwarf planet takes 248 years to orbit the Sun, Pluto won’t complete a full orbit until the year 2178 since its discovery.

Pluto orbits the Sun at an average distance of  5.9 billion km and takes 248 years for a full orbit. Its distance from the Sun varies from 4.4 billion km to 7.4 billion km due to a highly elliptical orbit.Because the orbit of Pluto varies so widely, it switchs places with Neptune, orbiting closer to the Sun. The last time this happened was in 1979.

It takes so long for Pluto to orbit the Sun, that it still hasn’t completed a third of an orbit from when it was discovered.
