The fire that devastated Fort McMurray has generated pyrocumulus clouds that lofted smoke over North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota. The smoke triggered warnings about unhealthy air in these states.

On May 3, 2016, a large wildfire burning southwest of Fort McMurray resulted in the mandatory evacuation more than 100,000 residents of the city and surrounding region. This was the largest recorded wildfire evacuation in Canadian history and the third-largest recorded environmental disaster evacuation.
